Brda8th St. Martin’s Hike – DISCOVERING THE CULTURAL HERITAGE AND GASTRONOMY OF BRDA
As part of this year’s St. Martin's celebrations in Brda, PLANINSKO DRUŠTVO BRDA (Brda Mountaineering Association) invites you to join the 8th St. Martin's Hike on Sunday, 8 November 2026. This year, the hike will once again explore a different part of Brda.
We will set off from Klet Brda and follow the Reka stream towards Šlovrenc. At the petrol station, we will turn left and continue through the vineyards. Our route will take us along a maze of farm tracks and narrow paths between fields until we reach the Šebeč stream below Gradno. The stream usually carries little water, allowing us to cross it by stepping on stones.
We will then climb towards the chapel near Šlovrenc before descending to the Kožbanjšček stream. Our first stop will be at the Čelo sports ground, where we will enjoy authentic local delicacies from Brda. Naturally, there will be young wine, "krodigini" (traditional local sausages) served with white polenta, and other delicious treats.
After crossing the stream, we will climb towards the road to Hruševlje. As we descend past an olive grove, we will enjoy beautiful views across Brda. From the road towards Neblo, we will see extensive vineyards on both sides, as well as panoramic views of Friuli, with its hills in the background.
Neblo is not a typical village of Brda, as its houses are mostly scattered individually or grouped in small clusters. Here, we will visit another local winemaker and sample his wine. After descending into the valley, we will climb on the opposite side towards the Fojana–Rutarje road. Along the way, we can rest in the shade of an oak tree, where a panoramic display identifies the villages and hilltops visible from this spot.
Further scenic views await us in Fojana, near the Church of the Holy Spirit with its leaning bell tower, and at the so-called “Brda Antenna” above Dobrovo, offering views of the eastern part of Brda. We will continue beneath a small pine wood, a remnant of the former castle park, and pass the castle before reaching our destination at Klet Brda, where a traditional Martinovanje meal and a glass of red wine will be waiting for us.
