4. Sakral Heritage and the Gonjače Tower – The Spiritual and Cultural Axis of Brda

Brda is not only a land of tradition and vineyards but also a rich treasury of sacred art. Every village – nearly every hill – has its own church. From the precious frescoes by Tone Kralj in Šmartno, to the artistic traces of Spacal and Zoran Mušič in the church at Gradno.
Special attention deserves the Church of the Holy Cross in Kojsko, with its over 500-year-old Gothic winged altar, as well as the Church of St. Andrew in Vrhovlje near Kožbana, whose location and simplicity embody the archaic spirituality of Brda.

These sacred sites are more than religious buildings – they are bearers of history, art, and the collective memory of the community. More information

On the hill of Mejnik above the village of Gonjače stands another important cultural and historical symbol – the Gonjače Viewpoint Tower with a memorial to the victims of World War II. The 23-meter-high tower, built in 1961 based on plans by architect Marko Šlajmer, offers an extraordinary panoramic view in all directions – from the Julian Alps to the Gulf of Trieste.

Next to it stands a memorial monument, created by sculptor Janez Boljka, bearing verses by writer France Bevk, dedicated to the 315 war victims from Brda and Slavia Friulana. The Gonjače Tower is thus not only a viewpoint, but also a place of remembrance and cultural reflection – a space where art, history, and national pride come together.
