April is the month of wild sprout dishes. Did you know that in spring the Brda cuisine puts on its “wild” attire?  Every year, the Brda region and its favourable climate reward the Brda people with good fruit and oil crops, which they want to share with you. So, when you visit, you can enjoy seasonal fruit, olive oil tasting or brandy tasting to discover the treasures of Brda. You can also buy the products every day at the Brda Tourist Information Centre in Šmartno.

Climb the observation tower in Gonjače

 

When visiting Goriška Brda, you can't pass by Gonjače without climbing the lookout tower and getting to know the landscape from a different angle. Looking down through the vineyards of Brda, surrounded by mountains on one side and the sea on the other, you can experience Brda in a new light.

Discover the medieval village of Šmartno

 

The village of Šmartno is just a stone's throw from Gonjače. Over the years, it has changed quite a bit, but it has retained its traditional appearance. Let the medieval fortified village with its five towers become a time machine that will take you on a historical journey through the turbulent periods of war and peace between neighbouring nations. Together with your little ones, you can go in search of the scary fairy-tale creatures that hide around Šmartno. An active walk around Šmartno starts with a search for QR points - these reveal the fairy-tale creatures that used to frighten children. A map of all the points can be found on the front of the building that houses the TIC, Šmartno 11. At the same time, you can also visit the Brda House Museum and the Brda House Cellar, where you can take a peek into the history and development of Brda houses.

Visit the most beautiful renaissance in Slovenia, Vila Vipolže

 

The Renaissance Palladian-style mansion is built on the basis of a medieval castle. A true journey through time, taking you back to the era of medieval troubadours, Renaissance dances and Baroque feasts. Tours are available at any time during Vila Vipolže's opening hours.

Discover the Sabotin hill, the Peace Park and the WWI museum

 

Climb Sabotin hill overlooking the River Soča, where fierce battles took place in World War I, now a place that reminds visitors of peace and reconciliation. Today, the border between Slovenia and Italy runs along its ridge. From here, you can enjoy a magnificent view stretching from the foothills of the Alps to the Adriatic Sea, all the way to Venice.

The visitor centre, with its well-equipped museum and info point, and the many remains of the outdoor museum, is an important stop along the route.

The 11.5 km long circular thematic trail called Briški krog miru (Brda Circle of Peace) starts at the Sabotin hunting lodge. As you walk, you can enjoy magnificent views stretching from the foothills of the Alps to the Adriatic Sea, all the way to Venice, and, in the depths, you can observe the beautiful colour of the emerald Soča River. There are 8 themed points along the route, where you will discover the rich heritage of the First World War and the Isonzo Front, as well as the diverse flora and fauna of the Sabotin protected area.

Explore the Dobrovo castle
 

Dobrovo Castle, a Renaissance mansion, began to be built around 1600. It is known that the medieval castle was demolished and the current one was built on its ruins. In the castle are displayed the permanent exhibitions of Zoran Mušič and the Castle Collection in Dobrovo, an attempt at reconstruction. Occasional exhibitions take place in well-kept attics.

Take a look at the natural stone bridge Krčnik

 

The Kožbanjšček stream, which flows at the foot of the hills of Brda below the village of Kožbana, after which it takes its name, has carved itself into the living rock with its extraordinary power, creating beautiful pools and troughs. A natural stone bridge, carved by rainwater, rises above them. The result is a picturesque natural landmark that is beautiful in all seasons.

Explore the abandoned village of Slapnik

 

Go on an adventure to an abandoned village, an outstanding example of ancient rural architecture in Brda. The closed doors of quiet farmhouses and long-abandoned fireplaces will lure you into a magical world of old fables, stories and legends.

Hike through picturesque hills on one of the themed hiking trails

 

Brda also offer several hiking trails. Take one of the themed Cherry Blossom Trails and get up close to the vineyards and orchards that dot the hills of Brda. Marked trails, named after old varieties of Brda cherries, offer a unique way of discovering the Brda landscape.

Hire an electric or mountain bike and cycle around the Brda region

 

If you don't fancy walking and would prefer to ride among the hills of Brda, you can rent an electric bike or mountain bike and ride along one of the cycle paths. The varied landscape will give you plenty of variety on your trip, and you'll also get a breath of fresh air.

Visit one of the many churches scattered on the hills of Brda

 

There is hardly a hill in Brda without a church. The churches are dedicated to the various saints who protect Brda people and landscape. Built in different periods and styles, the churches are certainly an important part of the sacral heritage of Brda.

The picturesque landscape captivates not only visitors, but also the locals, who never tire of seeing it, even though they see it every day. It often inspires and encourages them to create, which is why Brda is home to a number of local artists who are happy to see anyone who appreciates their work. You can also buy their products at the Brda Tourist Information Centre and Vila Vipolže, and in good weather at the stalls in Šmartno.
