Masterclass Brda, Home of Rebula at Vinitaly Verona

On 9 April, thirteen wineries from the regions of Brda and Collio presented their various interpretations of Rebula at the Vinitaly fair in Verona for the second time. This year, the focus was on the best vintages of this varietal. United in the project Brda – Home of Rebula, the winemakers addressed professionals from all over the world and the media, inviting them to the central event dedicated to Rebula, which will be held on August 28 in Brda.

The project ,which gathers winemakers from both sides of the border around the grape variety that best expresses the terroir of Brda in Slovenia and Collio in Italy, began in August 2017 in Brda and has so far organised three events relating to different aspects of Rebula.

The tasting at the Verona fair was led by Gašper Čarman, wine expert and Slovenia’s best sommelier in 2013 and 2015. An introduction to the organoleptic properties of the wine was provided by Luca Gardini, wine critic from Italy and the best sommelier in Europe (2009) and in the world (2010). The influence of the terroir on the style of Rebula was explained by Denis Rusjan, Associate Professor at the Biotechnical Faculty in Ljubljana. Finally, the details of single vintages from 2010 to 2018 were described by the winemaker Aleks Simčič.

The Brda – Home of Rebula project brings together well-known wine names: Marjan Simčič, Edi Simčič, Ferdinand, Klet Brda, Ščurek, Dolfo, Erzetič, Zanut and Medot from Brda, and Gravner, Kristjan Keber, Radikon and Jermann from Collio.  The event featured three different styles of Rebula – fresh, aged in barrels and rebula with extended skin contact.

By now over one hundred representatives of the international wine media have stopped by, such as the British magazine Decanter, Wine Spectator and Wine and Spirits from the US, and the Italian newspapers La Repubblica and La Stampa, all important opinion makers in their countries and around the globe. During the master class held in Vila Vipolže in Brda in August 2018, the organisers took part in a pilot series about world-known wine regions filmed by a famous American production company.
