In the far west corner of Slovenia, stretching on 72 sq. km, lies an interesting and charming land called Brda. The Brda hills, where approximately six thousand inhabitants live in grouped villages that usually encircle a small church, sweep gently downwards to the Friulian plain. With the permission of the weather the land offers an opening of a new horizon to the visitors - the Adriatic Sea, nourishing the fertile flysch-based soil with the best of its benefical Mediterranean climate. Excellent conditions and harworking people, numerous types of luscious fruits, such as cherries, peaches, apricots, figs, chestnuts, olives and last but not least grapes, which are turned into a distinguished, sweet wine around St. Martin's Day. In collaboration with the local people nature offers numerous beautiful blossoms in spring, luscious fruits in summer and a magnificent game of colours in autumn, when the most important activity of grape-harvesting takes place. In the late autumn and winter nature rests, sometimes even snow falls down, while the farmers turn to their cellars where good wines are set free of their barrels.

From Nova Gorica you drive through Solkan, where you turn to Brda over the Solkan Bridge. The view will show you a charming emerald green Soča River and elegant train bridge made of stone, which is with its 85m long arch, today, between three most beautiful stone bridges in the world. So-called Osim Road, which in part courses on the Italian territory, will convey you to Brda.

Through the villages Podasbotin and Hum the road takes you to KOJSKO, onetime a centre of the East part of the land. On the hill over the village, there is a small Gotic church of St. Cross with double-winged altar made of wood (unique in Slovenia) from 1515 and with two baroque lateral altars and with a few perserved frescoes on the walls.

Through the picturesque Brda land between the vineyards and fruit gardens, the road will take you forward to village GONJAČE. There you can take a look at a monument erected to the memory of victims of Second World War, work of sculptor Janez Boljka. And you can go up on a 23m high outlook tower. From there you can see Brda, Julian Alps, Carnian Alps, Dolomites, over the Friulian plan to the Adriatic sea, the Karst, Vipava valley and Trnovo forest. You can give a look at small rural museum and for welcome you can propose with local wine of Brda in restaurant of that place.

Not far away from there ŠMARTNO is located, a medieval village, surrounded with walls and fortified with five defensive towers, which stand by three entrances. During the visit you will feel like walking in medieval labyrinth. Here you can see a typical house of Brda, a house with »spahnjenca« and the House of culture. Church of St. Martin gives a beautifull image to a village. It was painted by Tone Kralj. In past, campanile was just one of defensive towers.

Than if you take the road to Dobrovo, you drive past Biljana and than you arrive in the centre of Brda. In DOBROVO you can visit a renaissance castle in which you can see the Bagueri collection, the wedding room, The Gallery of graphics of world-famous Brda's compatriot Zoran Mušič. Under the cover of the castle, there is the Enotheque Brda in the ex-cellar of castle and the restaurant.

After visiting the castle you can take a walk to the Wine cellar Goriška brda, the biggest one in Slovenia. The visit to the cellar is lead by professionals and sommeliers. In a special room for tasting the visit is crowned by wine tasting of brands such as Peneča Rebula, Villa Brda, Quercus and Bagueri. The employees at the new wine store offer their help at deciding on wines.

From here you go to MEDANA, the birthplace of poets Alojz Gradnik and Ludvik Zorzut, where you can see the house in which they were born. You can take a look to the tomb of both of them on the cementery, which is located near the Gradnik's home and becomes animated once a year when the »days of wine and poetry« are organized.

From Medana the road takes you through Ceglo to the southest part of Brda, in the village called VIPOLŽE, where between a hundred years old cypresses, the castle of Vipolže is located. Castle arhitecture rose between Renaissance and Baroque, which presents one of the most beautifull cottages in Slovenia.

In the North-East side from here, there is a 800 years old village called CEROVO. In Dolnje Cerovo the church of St. Lenart, which is belted with chain, takes place. In this church there is a beautiful altarpiece with Maria with Jesus, St. Lenart and St. Peter from 18. century. In Gornje Cerovo the church of St. Nikolaj is located and near that church you can see the deepest fountain in Brda. Finally the road takes you to Hum and your circular tour is finished.

You can variegate your tour by visiting other private wine cellars, tourist farms, inns, holiday farms and restaurants.
